Ex zone (explosion hazard zone)
EX zone and its accessories - safety in explosion hazards
The EX zone, or explosion hazard zone, is space in workplaces where an explosion may occur due to the presence of flammable gases, dust or substances In such a zone, it is necessary to use appropriate devices and safeguards to minimize the risk of explosion and ensure employee safety.
In an explosion hazard zone, there is a real risk of explosion of dust, gases and other flammable substances, which is why it is crucial to use devices specially adapted to work in such conditions. The devices that can be found in our catalog are designed to work inside spaces where explosive gases, substances or dust may occur. The use of appropriate equipment is essential to minimize the risk and ensure safe working conditions.
Explosion Hazard Zone - How to Mark It ?
Ex zones it's different explosion hazard zones designated where there is an explosive atmosphere .
The obligation to designate ex zones rests with the designer, investor or owner of the plant. The process of designating explosion hazard zones in places where flammable gases and other substances are present is complex and requires taking into account many different factors, such as layer, sediment and accumulated dust, as sources that can potentially generate an explosive atmosphere. It is important here to recognize the potential threat and classify the surface into the appropriate ex zone, as well as to determine the range of this zone.
Many precautions must be taken in an explosion hazard zone. The devices should meet the appropriate standards and have the required certificates. Warning signs must be visible and legible to inform employees about the hazard. Systematic inspection of the condition of devices and their appropriate protection are essential for safe work in such a space.
Ex zones should be marked with a sign that is part of the safety marking in the zone. The warning sign informing about the possibility of the occurrence of explosive atmospheres in quantities that pose a threat to safety and health has a triangular shape with a black border. The triangle contains the black letters EX on a yellow background (the yellow background should constitute at least 50% of the sign's surface). This sign can be seen in many manufacturing, chemical and industrial plants.
The sign is one of the necessary elements on the way to increasing safety in the explosion hazard zone. In order to minimize the risk of explosion, it is also important to properly monitor the explosion hazard zone. The concentration of gases or dust and other explosive substances must be checked regularly. In the event of exceeding the permissible standards, immediate action must be taken to eliminate the threat and secure the space against explosion.
According to the Regulation of the Minister of Economy of 8 July 2010 (Journal of Laws 2010 No. 138 item 931), the explosion hazard zone is determined based on the probability and time of occurrence of an explosive atmosphere. We distinguish 3 ex zones for gases, steam and mist (zone 0, 1 and 2) and 3 zones for dust (20, 21 and 22).
Ex zone 0
It is characterized by the constant, frequent or long-term presence of an explosive atmosphere containing a mixture of flammable substances in the form of gases, vapours, mists and air.
Ex zone 1
An explosive atmosphere containing a mixture of flammable substances such as gases, vapours, mists with air may sometimes occur during normal operation.
Ex-zone 2
no explosive atmosphere occurs during normal operation containing a mixture of flammable substances such as gases, steam, mist with air and, if it occurs, lasts for a short period.
Ex-zone 20
an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of flammable dust in the air occurs continuously, frequently or for long periods
Ex-zone 21
Occasionally, during normal operation, an explosive atmosphere may occur in the form of a cloud of flammable dust in the air
Ex-zone 22
During normal operation, an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of flammable dust in the air does not occur, and if it does occur, it persists for a short period.
Ex equipment
Once the hazardous areas have been designated, appropriate equipment should be selected to provide the best protection where flammable gases, dusts or substances are present. The employer should apply protective measures appropriate to the type of activity to prevent the formation of an explosive atmosphere, prevent the ignition of an explosive atmosphere and limit the harmful effects in the event of an explosion of dusts, gases or substances in order to protect the health and safety of workers.
If necessary, the employer should, among other things, enable quick and safe exit from the explosion hazard zone. In such a case, the plant will need appropriate equipment — explosion-proof lighting, i.e. special lamps for the zone . In order to protect against the explosion of dust, substances, where flammable gases are present and to ensure appropriate evacuation conditions, it is also necessary to maintain continuous communication - see our devices designed for Ex zones in mining and industry :

Devices needed for zones where flammable dust, gases and substances have been detected can be found in this category of devices. We offer devices such as telephone communication, communication and explosion-proof lighting.
The EX zone requires a specialist approach and proper preparation. Employee protection is crucial, therefore they must be provided with appropriate training on how to work in such a space. Employees must be aware of the hazards associated with explosions and have knowledge on how to follow explosion protection procedures.
The explosion hazard zone requires special attention and appropriate precautions. The use of specialist equipment and devices adapted to work in such conditions is essential to minimize the risk of explosion. The explosion hazard zone must be properly secured, and employees should be aware of the hazards and follow safety procedures. This is the only way to ensure safe working conditions in the EX zone .
